Title of the Project:

CAMerlang

Executive Summary / Abstract:

Taking care of one's own facial health is now a common lifestyle among Indonesian youth, especially adolescents. It was happening due to several factors, including the prevalence of skin problems. According to a 2020 survey, many skin problems occurred across Indonesian women, in which 29.9 percent of the skin problems are acne. It is a chronic skin disease with complicated characteristics and processes. Because of the various causes and treatments for acne’s lesions, it is vital to do an accurate and objective diagnosis on patients’ faces before treatment. The standard method of diagnosis is through visual inspection and acne counting. However, they are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and subjective, as the diagnosis’ outcome is dependent on the expert's knowledge and abilities. Due to those factors, several questions regarding enhancement on skin problems treatment and prevention should be answered by creating a computerized system to determine the cause of skin problems and how to effectively cure them. Through a cloud-based mobile application product called CAMerlang, we will answer questions such as “What are the procedures to determine skin problems’ causes?”, “How can we cure skin problems effectively?”, and “How can we educate people about skin problems?”.

How did your team come up with this project?

At first we thought of making a similar project which uses MRI images to determine what the disease the patient is diagnosed with, but we scrapped that idea because of how hard it will be for us to build a dataset for the machine learning model. We tried to keep in mind what sort of idea is feasible with a limited set of data for the model and with each of our own abilities. After some more brainstorming and research, we came to an agreement that skin problems identification is another good implementation of image classification in a mobile application.
